You know, the ones with the 12 keys, plus like 50 different function keys.. well, we’ve had them at work ever since I started working here, and it took me like a week to learn how to use it, but I could never get the headset to work right.. well, I’m proud to say, 1 year later, I have finally managed to do it.. so..here I am at work, with my headset on..feeling on proud of myself ;)

My company sells a software package designed towards small business retail. We also make some e-commerce integration software that works with it so you can have a web site that syncs with your main retail software. Within that e-commerice integration software, there is a section for uploading pictures to a hosted e-commerce site. Now, common sense would dictate, that if you are having your web site hosted by someone else, but are in fact, hosting the web site from your own local computer, that you would not need to trasfer pictures to yourself. But, as so often is the case with tech support, common sense got shoved out the bottom of the cd-rom tray when the coffee cut was put in. No room for both ya know, and we all know how important that coffee is. Anyways, this gentlman was haveing some problems, ftping files from point a, to point a. (yes, he was trying to ftp them over themselves). He installed an FTP server on his local machine (the same one hosting his web site) and pointed the default directory to his retail software’s picture directory. He then tried to upload pictures from his retail software’s picture directory, to his ftp server….with the default location for his uploads being……..his retail software’s picture directory. He then proceeded to take screen shots of the resulting error message, in hopes that if we saw the problem with our software, we could resolve it for him.

Yes…good old tech support. The profession that keeps mice manufactures and pain killer companies in business.

So, I discovered hashtables today…I know — how could I go so long without knowing about them? I dunno..I guess I’m just retarded. I had always thought to get a key/value list, you had to use some sort of multi-dimensional array, and that’s a hack, at the very best….

Here’s the MSDN page on hashtables

So, I’ve worked enough overtime this pay period that I’m pretty sure it will cover my base rent in OT alone. Downside is, I’m totaly worn down…. upside is, well, I think it’ll cover my base rent, which is good because I had to buy 2 new tires last week, and I’ll have to buy another 2 tires on friday or saturday, probably. Tires are expensive…

A customer is totaly livid about a percieved, but as of yet unrealised deadline slip. We won’t let it slip, but there’s a lot of pressure. I quit smoking..but days like this make me wish I hadn’t..

Well, being a developer on the M$ Platform, I spend a fair amount of time looking @ technical web pages on Microsoft’s MSDN site, however, the font they use is horribly small. Well, a co-worker showed me a trick today, which utterly simple, is a real eye saver. In both FireFox and IE, if you hold down the control key, and scroll the mouse wheel, you can adjust the font size of the page smaller or larger. Yay for me :)

It’s kind of like, two people talking over a brick wall. When things are good and everything is in order, they can’t really see each other, they don’t know what they look like, but they can communicate clearly. Now, say a truck drives by (truck representing any myrid amount of things that can go on in a system) and you’ve got the following…

[.Net] “I’ll meet you at 7!”

[wall][wall][wall][wall][wall][wall][wall][wall]
[truck][truck][truck][truck][truck][truck][truck]

[Com] “I didn’t touch your sister!”

——and that’s one reason COM sucks.

So, here’s a little tech tip. This is how you get the BCC field to show up by default in a new email in outlook 2003.
It’s a simple reghack; add the following to your registry at: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Preferences

ShowBcc=dword:00000001

If you don’t know what HKCU is, don’t even attempt this, as you may mess up your registry.

So, I just found out that COM interop is going to be in the .NET Compact Framework for version 2.0 (Code named Whidbey). While working with COM often times sucks, it does allow one to do some cool stuff with unmanaged code, from managed code such as the .NET Framework.

I stumbled upon a really interesting blog today… Apparently, F-Secure keeps a virus and securities related blog, including posting pictures. The area’s covered are everything from the recent Defcon convention, to the latest alerts for Symbian based mobile phones and various PocketPC related securities. Of course, they also touch on Xp SP2 and general windows/pc related information. It’s actualy really cool.

Well, I’m here at work, it’s 6:!4, and I’m thinking about getting some beer. While I don’t actualy have any beer, I did stumble upon this site: 99 bottles of beer.

It’s got the lyrics to 99 bottles of beer, in just about any programming language ever invented.

So, Python goes .NET. Kind sweet, actualy, even though I don’t know Python.

Some features:
Fast – IronPython-0.6 is up to 1.7x faster than Python-2.3 on the standard pystone benchmark. An early performance report is are contained in this paper for PyCon 2004.
Integrated with the Common Language Runtime – IronPython code can easily use CLR libraries and Python classes can extend CLR classes.
Fully dynamic – IronPython supports an interactive interpreter and transparent on-the-fly compilation of source files just like standard Python.
Optionally static – IronPython also supports static compilation of Python code to produce static executables (.exe’s) that can be run directly or static libraries (.dll’s) that can be called from other CLR languages including C#, VB, managed C++ and many more.
Managed and verifiable – IronPython generates verifiable assemblies with no dependencies on native libraries that can run in environments which require verifiable managed code.

So, apparently, by “Party Like a Rock Star” Rock Star Energy Drink doesn’t mean to drink out of the can really fast then slam the can down, causing some super caffinated liquid vitamin type drink to splash back into your eye. That made me cry like a Rock Star.
