So, I saw a really cool article today, about new metal alloy’s.. I don’t normally care about new metal alloys, and I’m betting most of you don’t, but I do care about cool new ways to do things, and the enhancement to everyday products some of these things bring about.

Standard Metal vs Liquid Metal

This new metal alloy called Liquid Metal, or Metallic Glass (I think it’s produced under both names) has a molecular structure more similar to liquids, and glass then to standard metal. The stuff that’s been produced so far is 10 times stronger than the current strongest industrial steel, which is pretty strong stuff.

So, as some of you may know, I purchased a metal sculpture on eBay (from Gensic Creative Metals) for $20 + shipping and handling. I got the base model, no extras like finish or color, because I was going to do that all on my own. The extras cost, well, extra and shipping was already going to be $40.

Here’s pictures of what I bought:
The Dragon Kingside view

Well, that was almost a month ago. So, I emailed the guy and asked what was up, last night. He responded in a very timely manor and said he shipped it like two weeks ago, and gave me the insurance code from USPS. Well, I got an email this morning saying he just got it back, returned to sender and was wondering if I had did that because it was damaged. I said no, I never got it or returned it. He then send me a picture of how he received it back from USPS:

Wrath of USPS

Anyways, he was very apologetic and offered to send me one WITH the metal finish right away. Now, I understand things do sometimes go wrong, and things do get trashed in the mail.. props to him for making it right.

Rae emailed this to me, asking that I put it up, so here it is:

BBC NEWS
Canada gives seal hunt go-ahead
Canada has given the go-ahead for what is expected to be one of the
biggest seal hunts in the country for decades.

The government says the hunt is now more humane and that more than
300,000 seals can be killed this year.

The seal population is reaching record levels as commercial fish
stocks are vanishing, the authorities say.

Animal rights campaigners, who say the hunt is cruel, have called for
a boycott of Canadian seafood before the hunt which is due to start on
29 March.

The two-month hunt takes place on ice floes off the Atlantic coast
where the seals give birth.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said in a statement that
Canada’s seal population was healthy and abundant.

“The harp seal herd – the most important seal herd for this industry -
is estimated at around five million animals, nearly the highest level
ever recorded, and almost triple what it was in the 1970s.”

Large-scale hunting will be allowed to continue until the number falls
to under four million.

One official told the AFP news agency: “We have to do our job
responsibly. We are looking at the middle ground, taking into account
conservation and the economic needs of the region.”

Uncomfortable images

But anti-hunt activists, who say many animals are skinned alive and
die in agony, say they will press ahead with the boycott.

“I think that [the Canadian government] are feeling the heat… they
can see the really serious implication of going ahead with the hunt
this year,” said Pat Ragan, of the Humane Society of the United
States.

“We’re going to be encouraging consumers to enter into dialogue with
their grocery stores and their restaurants and say ‘Please don’t serve
Canadian seafood’ or ‘I won’t buy Canadian seafood until this hunt is
over’,” she told Reuters news agency.

The seal hunt in Newfoundland and Labrador went into decline some 25
years ago, after images of hunters clubbing infant seals horrified TV
viewers across the world.

So, last night was Jeremy’s going away party. He’s going to Alaska for a few months to clean toilets. I think he’s part of a maintence crew for a cleanup crew that’s working on a tanker (or something to that affect) that split in half up there. I made some Sushi (as did Danny) which turned out to be super good. Far better than I’ve ever had at any sushi bar. Between the two of us we made seared salmon rolls, tuna rolls (the tuna Jeremy’s dad had brought back with him from fishing in Alaska) and cucumber rolls. It was all a huge hit, with the palte never lasting a full run around the room. All in all we had prepared 9 full rolls of sushi and each roll was gone as fast as we could make it.

The party ran much later than I had thought it would..I passed out around 1:30am but kept getting woken up untill about 6am. Ironicaly, a lot of it was partialy my own fault..I had gotten true or dare Jenga and left it out, and all the drunk people were buzzing around Jenga like a moth to a flame :)

I also got some stainless steel chopsticks yesterday (yay for me!) which totaly kick ass, except that drunk people seem to think they are poking sticks instead of eating utensils. I was constantly saying, ‘Please put down my eating utensils..I do actually eat with those, they are not for picking your nose or scratching your ass.” Ok, well, no one was picking their nose or scratching their ass with them, but some select few people did keep trying to poke other peolple in throat with them.

All in all, it was a good party…bon voyage Jeremy — see ya in a few months :)

So, I went out with Evan and Casey last night and since I’ve quit smoking, and didn’t want to smoke, Evan gave me a patch. He told me I might have wierd vivid dreams if I slept with it on. Boy was he right. Here’s the one I just had..which strangely enough, I can remeber quite well.

Here’s how it went.

I went to vegas with this girl I didn’t know. Average build, dark black hair..she looks kinda like Avirl Lavign, but not quite as skinny (my memory is a little blurry, this girl might also have been Sheri’s friend Brie). We left the strip and walked out into this desert area, where we ran into my ex Kittie’s family, well, part of it anyways. It was Robbert her brother, Holly, her mom, and the dad from The Wild Thornberrys (yes, the cartoon). Anyways, they had this big military style tent building and walked off somewhere. The girl I was with and I were hanging out in the tent, when this tiger came along all pissed off and trying to jump up on the bunks. It started firguring out how to get on the upper bunks, which is where we were so I had to beat it across the nose with my fist untill it started purring. Durring that fight, Kittie called my cell phone all upset, and I told her I would call her back but she got all pissed off untill I explained that we were in the middle of a tiger attack. A little while later, Kittie’s family came back and the girl and I went to get more water, which somehow brought us back to the strip at vegas. On the walk back, I had this walkie-talkie from when I was 10, and it picked up my boss Dan King. We chit-chatted a bit and he said he would call me. Somehow, we were automagically driving by then, and we saw a bunch of my oo-workers getting pulled over. This guy Jessie was pulled over, and Ryan Brownless and Evan were togeather in the same car, getting pulled over. That’s when Dan called, he was getting pulled over too.

Well, that’s the whole dream..it seemed in dream time to take almost the full day.

It’s just wierd how vivid and lucid this dream was, because I almost NEVER remember dreams.

So, I just noticed that somehow, comment spam has been bypassing ALL my spam filters. Infact, somehow, they’ve bypassed the normal comment processes completely, as I’m not even getting comment notifications at all on these. So, I guess it’s time to upgrade to 1.5. I hope this won’t fubar my WordPress theme. If you happen to check the page over the weekend and it looks funky, that’s because I’m in the processes of upgrading ;)

See ya on the flip side.

And after I get a fairing/body kit, it should look something like this…

So, a fellow named Matt Turner has integrated the new $500 mac mini into his VW GTI, and it’s one of the cleanest, sweetest looking in-car computer setups I’ve ever seen. Check out his write up of how he did it, and see some cool pictures of the end result here.

So, my blog’s been pretty dark recently, not a lot of posting going on. Reason being, my life has been pretty boring. Well, that’s not entirely true, but all the non-boring parts are more or less of the kiss and tell variety, to varying degrees, or close enough that I just didn’t feel like sharing. I’d been digging on a girl for a while, but she switched to a night shift job, plus has to move, plus is taking her MCAT’s in like a month, and (hopefully) moving to Cali for med school in a year, that’s a lot of points against me. We had a lot of fun hanging out at first, but now, it just seems strained. When she calls, I’m busy and when I call, she’s busy.. Recently it seems like it’s almost work to carry on a conversation. Well, work is the wrong word to use. It’s just not as easy at it used to be. We’re each pretty entrenched in starting our careers, which is really pretty consuming. A bit of a dissapointment, really, cause she had a lot of qualities that I was attracted. She is Chinese, which was really novel for me, because I’m half Chinese and never dated an asian girl before, of any nationality. As I get older, I really feel like I missed out on a lot of my heritage and culture. My dad didn’t want to teach my sister or me chinese, because he thought it would confuse us, and almost no history our culture, he just wasn’t that kind of man. Suffice to say, it was really nice being able to be around someone who was brimming with so much of what I feel like I missed out on. In the end though, it seems, as if for now, it’s just not in the stars so to speak. Valient effort, bravo, but as I said before, it just seems ..strained, at the moment anyways. Guess it’s time to open my doors again :) . Not that they were ever really closed since my last actual g/f, but I just see the time commitment drasticaly lowering.

Last Friday I went to Microsoft’s ISV Community Days conference up in Jantzen beach. It was an AWSOME experience. It was all about Visual Studio 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005. I think I found the SQL server portion of the show the most interesting. I’ve been working in databases for a couple of years now, but only in the past 9 months has it been a daily occurance. Infact, I spend maybe 50% of time each day at work entrenched in the guts of Databases, and man, it’s really interesting. The whole world is data driven, and that data is ALL in databases. The conference gave me some real world examples of OLAP Cubes, which is a geeky way of saying, a 3dimensional database. For example, 1 dimmension would be, how much product do I have. Another dimension would be, where is the product located. The third dimension might be, when was it there. By looking at those 3 dimensions in different ways, you can find lots of ways to extract OTHER usefull information. Heh, sorry, end geekout. It’s just interesting when you think about how much data is in the world, and the kind of things you can do with it. Stores all have databases, banks, the govt, businesses, charities, airlines, car dealerships, almost any piece of information about anything, is stored in a database. Think about it :)

So, Sheri tells me I’m going out with her, a few other people I know, and a bunch of people I don’t know on Friday. We’ll have to see how it goes, but I’m thinking it probably be pretty fun.

Oh, and I’ve gotten in touch with Nadia again. That makes me EXTREAMLY happy. I’ve know Nadia for nearly a decade now, but it seems I only get to talk to her in spurts, throughout the years. I spent a few hours chatting with over drinks. Funny thing is, since it was online, we had to drink togeather, seperately ;) . So, Nadia, if you ever decide to check out my blog, I just wanna say, it was a lotta fun, let’s not make it a span of a few years before we talk again.

Sorry all the spelling errors, I’m way too tired at the moment to even care :)
